Experiments in the Darkroom
Photogram Research
Man Ray - Rayographs
Man Ray, upon his emigration to Paris claimed that he has invented the practice of photograms, that he named "rayographs". Photograms are images made on photographic paper without using a camera. Rayographs are usually exposed to light at least three times as practiced by it's innovator. Each time there were exposed to light, the paper darkened where it wasn't masked. László Moholy-Nagy - Fotogramm
Photograms are made by placing objects on top of photographic paper, then exposing that paper to light before developing. this process darkens the parts of the paper that had nothing placed on top of it. This process has been practiced since the dawn of photography . Nagy was a very influential teacher at the Bauhaus school in Germany who is well recognised in modern art. |
Christian Schad - Schadographs
Schadographs were among the first intentional abstract forms of photography, using the technique of photograms, which used no physical cameras. Schad covered pieces of light sensitive paper with objects and put this on a windowsill. he would commonly use materials like paper scraps and scraps of fabrics, even looking in bins for these objects at times. He would also often cut jagged borders around the schadographs that he said would "free them". |
Chemigrams
The chemigram process was pionerred by Pierre Cordier in the 1950's . This is made via the process of 'painting with chemicals' on light sensitive photographic paper.
I made my chemigrams by using my lipgloss, perfume, sugar soap and acetone. i did my first experiment by spraying the sugar soap onto the paper then smearing some lipgloss onto it. I then used the develop, stop, fix method to create the final developed chemigram,
